Try changeing X for an Optimized server!!
Which grafix engine are you running?
What's your chip? Do you know your Ramdac?

I have a pda in my hand running X. It has 8M of ram for X, and the
applications and runs quite well. Be careful about making assumptions
based on what ps tells you, it isn't revealing everything.
