Good question.
I like it mostly because I know it and its available more-or-less anywhere.

About 1985, one of the Unix mags interviewed Bill Joy. He said he'd stopped using
vi within six months of writing it, and had never understood why AT&T included it
as a standard part of System III, V, ... He said he'd use 'ed' on any Unix system
other than his own; saves the trouble of dealing with terminal configuration. At
home base, he used something far more powerful -- I think Interleaf.
