I don't like the Emacs "perl" mode either.  It's just Lisp, though; you could
fix it if you were motivated enough.

Actually, I've become pretty disgusted by Perl in general, and I'm trying
to avoid it.  Maybe that's why I don't have problems with Emacs. :-)

My biggest problem with Perl is CPAN, which tries to upgrade my entire
universe just to install one stupid Perl module.  CPAN then invariably
screws up, leaving my Perl installation in a boneheaded mess.  And
Perl (the language) scares me.  I've switched a lot of what I would
have used Perl for to Tcl or PHP, and I'm probably going to learn
Python when I have the time.

(Notice the smooth move from religious text-editor wars to religious
language wars? :-)
