And I can't imagine having to reinstall for every minor release of a
distribution. apt-get has yet to fsck up my machine and it makes
upgrading very painless. 

You seem to think that "apt-get upgrade" blows away your existing
configuration files, which is not true (otherwise it wouldn't be very
useful).
