FYI, I got this note in (since I was writing a column for Enterprise
Linux Mag before it closed and was therefore considered "press") about an
upcoming event in Ottawa...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ottawa to Host Global IPv6 Summit, May 14 – 16, 2001

Summit to focus on transition and deployment of IPv6

Reston, VA, April 17th, 2001 – The IPv6 Forum and Foretec Seminars have announced that the next Global IPv6 Summit will be held May 14 – 16, 2001 in Ottawa, Canada at the Chateau Laurier. At this global summit, industry leaders will report on progress integrating Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) into today's IPv4-based Internet, where it will run concurrently with IPv4 before eventually replacing it.

Is the Internet robust enough to support the new applications envisioned for wireless handsets, net appliances, always-on and interactive devices?

"Yes, if we accept the inevitable and begin moving to Internet Protocol version 6 now," said John Klensin, Internet Architecture Board chairman and Internet keynote speaker at the Global IPv6 Summit in Canada. "It requires planning and effort, but the sooner it's begun the better. Today's IPv4 is being pushed to the limit."

IPv6 preserves everything that's good about today's Internet – and adds much more: enormous increases in addresses, mobile user support and automated management, mandatory security and optional service levels.

"Summit attendees concerned with 3G -- that is, third generation wireless technology -- as well as eHome, eEntertainment and other Next Generation peer-to-peer applications will discover why IPv6 is the protocol of choice," stressed Latif Ladid, IPv6 Forum president and vice president at Ericcson Telebit.

In addition to describing IPv4-IPv6 coexistence and transition experience, speakers in Ottawa will report on pilot deployments, leadership military programs and initiatives in the Far East, where the pressure for IPv6 is great and adoption is government policy.

Alcatel is the principal sponsor of the Global IPv6 Summit in Canada. Additional sponsors include: Compaq Computer Corporation, Ericsson, Nokia and Nortel Networks.
