In addition to Bart's advice, you might want to consider grabbing Andre
Hedrick's huge IDE patch.  It adds better support for a number of IDE
chipsets.  It's at
 http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/hedrick/
just look in the appropriate subdirectory for the kernel version you're
running.
