Actually, I downloaded the latest nfs-utils from kernel.org, and it didn't
help. However, I recompiled the kernel to include nfsd directly (as
opposed to a module) and it worked.
I think the 2.4-series kernels are not quite ready for prime time -- I've
found a couple of other problems and had a machine lock up on me.
