What's in the dir?

I don't know about Mandrake, Dave, but the RedHat warnings at
http://www.redhat.com/support/errata/RHSA-2001-016.html might be
relevant.  E.g. "rpm-4.0.2 will fail to install if you have both db1 and
db3 rpm databases in /var/lib/rpm. ...."

Worked for me.  FWIW I didn't use tarball; I did `rpm -U rpm*'.
