The Ottawa Canada Linux Users Group invites you to attend their
September monthly meeting on standard tools.

Linux offers many standard tools that make our lives easier, especially
when used effectively. The goal of this meeting is to introduce some of
these tools to those unfamiliar with them (gasp!) and present new and
useful tricks to those who already use them.

Topics: * 8 things you need to know to use vi
          * Introduction to GNU screen
          * Lightning talks on various tools

8 things you need to know to use vi:

Heard about "vi" or "vim"? But does it look too annoying or complicated
to learn? Let Frank take you down this free journey of disovery of this
revered and despised editor. This presentation is titled "8 things you
need to know to use vi".

Frank Kannemann is a Solaris "Professional" during the
day and hacks around with Linux in his spare time.

Introduction to GNU screen:

Screen is a terminal multiplexor, providing a program by which a single
console can spawn and control any number of consoles. Running inside of
screen, these consoles benefit from screen's capabilities, such as
monitoring, history, scrollback and the ability to detach and reattach
from the user's terminal. Multiple users in a given session are even
possible for collaborative purposes.

Screen is quite possibly one of the best Unix utilities ever created,
and the most overlooked by new Linux users, who think that
multi-gnome-terminal is cool.

This short introduction will introduce screen to the audience, and show
them why it is the best tool they never knew they needed...unless
they're wise enough to use it already.

Lightning talks:

After our two main talks, we will have a series of 5 minute lightning
talks. Please consider giving a short talk on your favourite tool.
Tell us something we don't already know about any tool we use daily!
Please email me if you are interested.

After the meeting, all are welcome to attend the montly Beer SIG at the
Cock & Lion Ale House, 202 Sparks Street near Bank.

For more information about this meeting, contact info-AT-oclug.on.ca or

Hope to see you on Tuesday!

Also: we need speakers for future meetings. Please email me if you are
interested in presenting any Linux-related topic or if you can refer me
to anyone who might be.

Cheers,
Jody
