I'm assuming you want the full graphical experience?

You might need to use a lighter-weight desktop (or not desktop; just
a window manager).

Some people say that xfce is a fast, functional window manager.

You would remove the kde or gnome from your system, and install the
xfce (or whatever) window manager.  You'll still be able to run
kde applications (like kwrite) or gnome apps (like evolution) if
you wish, even if you remove the "desktops".
